Opposing Viewpoints is a library subscription database that provides access to articles from various publications such as magazines, newspapers, and journals. In addition, it has viewpoint essays on controversial topics. You can use this resource to help you find a topic and focus on something more specific, gain knowledge on the subject, and see different sides of an issue.
How do I find Opposing Viewpoints?
Start from the Los Angeles Southwest College home page: www.lasc.edu
Click on the Library link from the top bar
Become familiar with the page
Click on the button: A to Z Databases
Scroll down the page and click on the Opposing Viewpoints
From off-campus, you must log in to access the databases:
Enter your LACCD student email address
Enter your LACCD portal password (same as Canvas/Register for classes).
Explore the interface. To find articles, you can:
7.A: Use the Search box by entering your keywords
7.B: Browse the issues in alphabetical order
How do I use Opposing Viewpoints?
Enter your search terms in the search box located on the top of the page, and press enter
Select a source type from the gray bar.
Select Viewpoints to access the pro and con articles
Review your search results, and click on a relevant title
Be sure to look at the dates for the articles
Review the title of the article, take a look at the author, date of publication, and additional information about the article
Scroll down and read the full article
How do I cite an article from Opposing Viewpoints?
Click on the Cite
Click on the appropriate citation style
Click on Select, then copy and paste it into your document
Be sure to review the generated citation and correct any errors
Be sure to format the citation properly, according to the appropriate citation style
