Although most of our library research databases contain news articles, we have specific powerful databases that focus on news and newspaper articles.

How do I find news articles in a library database?

  1. Start from the Los Angeles Southwest College home page: www.lasc.edu
  2. Click on the Library button from the top menu
  3. Become familiar with the page
  4. Click on the button for A to Z Databases
  5. Scroll down and click on LA Times.
  6. From off-campus, you must log in to access the databases:
    • Enter your LACCD ID number or student email address and password.
  7. In the search box enter your search keywords
    • think of a current event or a topic
  8. Click on the Search button
  9. In the "Sorted by" menu, select "Most recent first"
  10. Review your search results and click on an appropriate title
  11. Review the news article
    • pay attention to the title, author, and date of the article
  12. Use the tools on the top right to save, cite, e-mail, and more
  13. Click on "Back to results" to return to the results list and review additional articles

Not sure what current event to search?

If you can't think of a topic to search for, then you can browse today's news!

  1. From any page in the database, click on the Publications link.
  2. Click on the desired news source such as Los Angeles Times newspaper link.
  3. Browse today's articles and select the desired article title.

Using the Citation Tool

  1. From an article in the database, click on the Cite tool.
  2. Select the appropriate citation style from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on Copy
  4. Click on Done
  5. Paste it into your word processor, correct any issues or errors it may have, and make sure that it is appropriately formatted.  Refer to the library's Citation page for guidelines and examples.
