Journal Article Found in a Database

Start with the author of the article, date of publication, title of the article, title of the journal, volume, issue number, page range, and DOI in URL style.  

  • No DOI?  End the citation with the page range (it gets cited just like an article from a print journal).
  • Do not include the name of the database

Journal Article Found on the Internet

Start with the author of the article, date of publication, title of the article, title of the journal, volume, issue number, page range, and DOI in URL style. 

  • No DOI? - list the web link (URL to the full-text of the article)

Identify the Citation Elements of a Journal Article with a DOI Found in a Database

  1. Author
  2. date of publication
  3. Title of article
    • use sentence-style capitalization
    • do not italicize 
  4. Title of the Journal
    • ​use title-style capitalization​
    • italicize
  5. volume number
    • ​​italicize
    • do not add the letters vol, just enter the number itself
    • if the article does not have a volume number, then omit this element
  6. (issue number)
    • enter the issue number itself inside parenthesis
    • do not italicize
    • if the article does not use issue numbers, then omit this element
    • if you are not able to find the issue number by looking at the article, then use the citation tool from the database to get this information
  7. page range
  8. DOI in URL format
    • start this element with:  https://doi.org then add the DOI number from the source
    • you can copy this DOI URL from the source, or from the citation tool
